Paresh Dave is a junior at the University of Southern California, where he is majoring in Print and Digital Journalism. He is also the recipient of the Mahatma Gandhi Scholarship. He describes himself as “glued to a screen” because he can usually be found in front of a television, computer, cell phone, iPod or movie screen. His three academic passions are politics, writing and computers, and he would like to pursue a career that bridges all of those subjects, such as journalism, law or politics. His dream is to work for the New York Times, build a network through contacts in the media world, and then eventually move into politics.

Currently, Paresh is the executive producer at Neon Tommy, the online publication of USC. He has risen to that position in just twelve short months, and is quite proud of that achievement. If he could turn his position at Neon Tommy into a paying job, Paresh says it would be the ideal job for him. He hopes to study abroad in Australia or the United Kingdom during the spring of 2012. If he ends up in London, he plans to stay for the summer and catch some of the Olympic events there.

An avid baseball fan, Paresh considers having seen all 30 Major League Baseball stadiums a personal achievement. When he was younger, he told his father that he would like to see every stadium in the U.S. Since then, he and his family have seen five or six a year, finishing this year in Minnesota. His favorite stadium is PNC Park in Pittsburgh. From seventh grade through his junior year in high school, Paresh ran his own website that tracked baseball players' contracts. He hopes to get back into tracking sports data when he is not so busy with school. Paresh is currently working with the sports department of the USC student radio station, providing commentary on football, basketball and baseball games. He is also a co-host of a weekly sports talk show on the station. He has been competitive in track and field, has added swimming and biking to his activities and hopes to compete in a triathlon before graduating from college.

Paresh has been most influenced in his life by his maternal grandmother. She has lived with his family since he was two years old. His parents both worked full time when he was younger, so his grandma was the one who walked him home from school every day, cooked for him and cared for him when he was sick. He has fond memories of throwing the ball around with her before he got into baseball as a youth. During his family's yearly road trips to all of the baseball stadiums, she was the one sitting next to him in the back seat. He taught her how to use an iPod last year, and enjoys playfully ruffling her feathers whenever he gets a chance. Paresh is a devout Hindu. He really enjoys living life according to the teachings of the Dalai Lama. One of the Dalai Lama's quotes that Paresh tries to abide by is: “I am going to benefit others as much as I can.”

Paresh's winning essay was based on his passion for and understanding of technology. It described how Apple and Microsoft have their respective places in the consumer and corporate cultures.
