2008: Shelby Olson

Shelby Olson is the Winter 2008 Scholarship Winner

Shelby Olson attends Pepperdine University in Malibu, California. Ms. Olson will be starting her junior year at Pepperdine, majoring in Liberal Arts with a Writing and Rhetoric Emphasis. She has maintained a 3.698 GPA throughout her career and has been on the Dean’s List. She plans to graduate in 2011.

One of Ms. Olson’s extracurricular activities includes Young Life, where she enjoys a leadership role. This is a Christian program geared towards kids in middle and high school. Once a week, they gather at a home, interacting with the students by singing, playing games with them, dancing, and having a short talk at the end of each session. She is readily available to answer questions about college and academic life to encourage the students to further their educations after they have graduated from high school.

Dancing has been Ms. Olson’s favorite activity since the age of two. Growing up, she participated in ballet, jazz, and hip-hop. She was heavily influenced by her sister, who was also involved in dance at a young age. In college, she has taken Latin and salsa classes. She is often the instigator of dancing at Young Life and other social events.

Ms. Olson’s next step in her education is to obtain her DDS, preferably at the University of Oklahoma, Health Sciences. She loves Southern California but wants to return to Oklahoma to be closer to her family. Eventually, Ms. Olson would like to open her own practice in Oklahoma. Along with her practice, Ms. Olson would like to start an outreach program to provide dental health to those families that cannot afford it. She believes that less fortunate families often neglect their dental health because of the expense involved. Maintaining good dental health is important for all people, especially youngsters. It is the key aspect of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Ms. Olson’s winning essay was based on her education in Florence, Italy. She spent a semester there and absolutely loved it. This experience taught Ms. Olson to appreciate America’s culture and the little things in day-to-day life that she missed while abroad. Florence is such an amazing city that Ms. Olson found it difficult to narrow her essay down to only three features.
