The Summer 2009 Charles Shafae' Scholarship Fund winner is Erin Frandsen.
Erin Frandsen is presently attending the University of Missouri-Columbia, where she is studying a pre-veterinary medicine curriculum. She has been on the Dean’s List her
entire college career, with an outstanding 4.0 GPA during the previous semester. Ms. Frandsen will be completing her second year of college enrollment with the course
credit equivalence of a senior. Having dual enrollment in high school and maintaining a rigorous course load helped her tremendously in terms of accelerating the completion
of her undergraduate studies.
Starting this fall, Ms. Frandsen will begin working on her Doctor of Veterinarian Medicine (DVM) degree. As a pre-vet scholar, Ms. Frandsen was pre-accepted to the University
of Missouri’s College of Veterinary Medicine during her senior year of high school. This ensured her a seat in veterinary school upon completion of undergraduate
requirements. Her numerous achievements, such as National Honor Society membership, Bright Flight Scholar standing and acceptance of the presidential award for
academic excellence all contributed to her success.
Ms. Frandsen has been fascinated with animals, specifically horses, since she was a young girl. In her spare time, she can often be found out at the barn. At an early age,
she knew that she wanted to be a veterinarian despite being told she would probably change her mind. The only thing that has changed is that her love for all animals has
grown, especially for the ones larger in nature, such as horses and cattle.
Since graduating from high school, Ms. Frandsen has worked at the same veterinarian clinic near her hometown and university. She likes the small town feel and the close knit
community of the livestock industry. Large animals (specifically horses and cattle) typically lack the proper care and often perish because they are not treated quickly enough
when they are ill. This is often due to a combination of a shortage of veterinarians and the distance between farms and veterinary clinics.
After obtaining her DVM, Ms. Frandsen plans on working either in an internship or for a large animal veterinary practice. At some point, Ms. Frandsen would like to open her
own practice in her hometown area and combine her clinic with mobile work to better care for the larger animals that have waited too long for prompt care and attention.
Ms. Frandsen’s winning essay correlated the presidencies of Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama. She cited the similarities in terms of the economic woes, high unemployment rates,
and inflation during their terms in office; in addition, she wrote about their solutions to these problems, saying that they were beneficial to lower income families and to
promoting a healthier environment and society in America.
