2011: Alyssa King

Alyssa King is the Winter 2011 Scholarship Winner

Alyssa King is currently in her sophomore year of undergraduate study at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida. She is completing a pre-nursing program which is part of the University of South Florida’s Honors College. Alyssa holds an impressive 3.97 GPA and has never received a grade lower than an A minus throughout her entire academic career. Remarkably, she notes never having missed a day or portion of a school day. She graduated in the top two percent of her graduating class and was awarded a scholarship from USF based on her academic achievements.

Upon completion of her undergraduate degree, Alyssa hopes to be employed as a nurse for 2–3 years in an intensive care unit. She will then apply to the Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) Master’s program at USF. Her ultimate goal is to be employed as a CRNA at All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Alyssa has always been attracted to the medical field and community service. She is a volunteer at Largo Medical Center in Largo, Florida, where she particularly enjoys interacting with patients and improving their lives in their worst moments. Alyssa has a history of extensive volunteer work and was awarded a Kiwanis Club scholarship as well as the Bright Futures Scholarship, which is based on community involvement, upon high school graduation.

In her spare time, Alyssa enjoys dancing competitively, which she has done for the past 16 years. She also enjoys cooking, sewing, and scrap-booking. In addition to her many extracurricular activities, Alyssa also works 10–15 hours a week as a tutor. She currently tutors students from elementary through high school. Her greatest joy is seeing the academic transformation in her students and the joy it brings the students and their families. Alyssa enjoys tutoring so much that she would have chosen to be a teacher if she were not on her current career path. Her love of tutoring began with assisting family and friends, and she has found that she thoroughly enjoys figuring alternate explanations for difficult concepts and seeing the success of her students.

Alyssa’s winning essay outlined the costs and benefits of the Netflix price hikes and its effect on the financial future of the company.
