Scholarship Question and Guidelines:

Downtown Pittsburgh sits atop an island at the center of three bodies of water, the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio rivers, the first two merging to become the third. If that weren't interesting in its own right, Pittsburgh is also home to 446 bridges. In fact, if one were to view Downtown Pittsburgh from the south, one would note that there were bridges as far as the eye could see. Not surprisingly, Pittsburgh has been nicknamed "The City of Bridges." In addition, Downtown Pittsburgh's PPG Place, a six-building structure of black plate glass with many turrets running along each wall, looks like a postmodern castle. In front stands a beautiful fountain, which, during the winter, is converted into an outdoor skating rink with a Christmas tree in the center.

Select another visually interesting city, describe 3-5 of its unique features, and explain their origin. Use sources, whenever possible, and MLA format throughout.

You must write a minimum of 1,000 words; there is no maximum word count. We will focus on grammar and the ability to present ideas clearly. Include a Works Cited page with a minimum of three sources. The essay must follow the Modern Language Association (MLA) system for documenting sources, which is set forth in the  MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, 6th edition (New York: MLA, 2003). Submit your essay using the form below. Do not send your transcript until it is requested.

Good Luck!
