2014: Alexis Grant

Alexis Grant is the 2014 Scholarship Winner

Alexis Grant is currently a junior at Howard University in the Columbia Heights neighborhood of Washington, D.C. She is majoring in both English and Psychology, and she has earned a cumulative GPA of 3.86. She is consistently on the Dean’s List and is also accomplished in a variety of extracurricular activities. She belongs to the Living Stones, a worship and arts ministry, and serves as its treasurer. She is a copy editor for the Hilltop, Howard University’s daily student newspaper, and also participates in the tennis club.

Alexis is originally from Farmington, Massachusetts, which is just outside of Boston. She is the oldest of four children, including two younger sisters in high school and a 9-year-old brother. Along with all her extracurricular involvement and academic excellence, Alexis also finds the time to sing and is presently learning to play the guitar. After graduation, she would like to pursue a career in counseling or social work. She enjoys interning as a case manager at a local mental health institute, and she would like to continue working in that field.

Alexis was very grateful and honored to receive this year’s Charles Shafaé Scholarship Award. Her essay discussing obesity, government subsidies, and the American agriculture industry was not only extremely well written but also informative and thought provoking. Her favorite professor at school, Dr. Dana Williams, has encouraged, inspired, and challenged her to advance her writing skills and taught her how to better formulate her thoughts on paper. Alexis’s efforts to strengthen her writing are evidenced in the clarity and quality of her winning essay. Best of luck with your studies, Alexis.
